For centuries spinel was the great imposter. Before modern technology spinel was often mistaken for ruby and sapphires. It is particularly famous for the 14th century “black princes ruby’ in the British crown jewels, which turned out to be a spinel and not a ruby.

Spinel are in their own right some of the most beautiful gemstones out there. The reds, purples and blues have a distinctive shade that are uniquely their own. I love spinels, I hope you do too.
